Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) expressed strong disapproval of former President Donald Trump’s efforts to dissuade Republican lawmakers from supporting a border security deal. Speaking to CNN’s Manu Raju, Romney labeled Trump’s actions as “really appalling,” criticizing the former president for prioritizing political strategy over addressing the ongoing migration crisis at the southern U.S. border.

Romney highlighted Trump’s intention to use the unresolved border situation as a campaign point against President Biden in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. He remarked on the importance of the border issue for Trump and condemned his advice to Republican senators and congresspeople to refrain from solving the border problem. Romney emphasized the real-life implications of the border crisis on Americans and the responsibility of presidential candidates to seek solutions rather than postponing them for political gain.

The context for Romney’s remarks is the recent bipartisan negotiations on a legislative package aimed at border security, along with funding for Ukraine and other allies. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his allies have suggested this might be Republicans’ best chance at a favorable deal, a sentiment made more urgent in light of Trump’s potential re-election.

However, Trump’s influence within the party, particularly among House conservatives, casts doubt on the bill’s prospects. Trump’s opposition was made explicit in a social media post where he stated, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people.”

McConnell recently proposed the possibility of dividing the national security package due to the dwindling likelihood of passing border security reforms. According to a Senate source familiar with GOP discussions, some Republicans see the concessions from Democrats as significant victories. Still, Trump’s opposition could hinder the bill’s passage in the GOP-dominated House, with some believing Trump’s camp aims to “kill it and run on the issue.”
