Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) said Sunday it was a mistake for the Democratic Party to back Joe Biden for reelection in 2024 despite public calls for a younger candidate, admitting party leaders ignored clear voter signals.
“It was absolutely a mistake for the party to not listen to those voters,” Murphy said on NBC’s Meet the Press. “They wanted somebody younger.”
Murphy criticized Democratic leadership for failing to act before Biden’s poor debate performance and subsequent withdrawal in July 2024, which left Kamala Harris little time to campaign before her loss to Donald Trump.
Although Murphy cited Biden’s legislative accomplishments, he added: “Ultimately, in retrospect, you can’t defend what the Democratic Party did.”
The senator also addressed questions about Biden’s mental fitness, noting in an earlier Politico interview that there was “no doubt” of cognitive decline, though he told NBC he personally saw a president “in control.”
Murphy’s remarks underscore broader frustrations within the Democratic Party as it reevaluates its direction after the 2024 defeat.
