Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Friday urged President Donald Trump to fire Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. following the ouster of CDC Director Susan Monarez and a wave of senior resignations.

Hundreds protested outside CDC headquarters in Atlanta Thursday after Monarez was fired amid disputes with Kennedy over rescinding COVID-19 vaccine approvals. Her departure prompted resignations from multiple high-ranking officials, including Demetre Daskalakis and Daniel Jernigan.

“Donald Trump knew Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would be a disastrous pick to lead health care in America and he nominated him anyway,” Schumer said. “RFK Jr.’s stubborn, pigheaded, and conspiracy-based attacks on proven science are going to make many more people sick and cause more deaths.”

Monarez’s lawyers allege she was fired for refusing to approve “unscientific, reckless directives.” Kennedy defended the decision, saying the CDC “is in trouble” and “some people should not be working there anymore.”

Schumer previously faulted Kennedy for mishandling the worst U.S. measles outbreak in 33 years and warned that keeping him in charge “undermines vaccines” and weakens public health protections.
