Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Wednesday challenged Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) assertion that the Democratic Party is unified, arguing that establishment Democrats lack a clear agenda and remain beholden to corporate interests. In a CNN interview, Sanders questioned what Democrats are actually united around if not bold policies like universal healthcare or campaign finance reform.

“United around what?” Sanders asked. “You need an agenda… The Democrats need to have the courage to take on the very powerful special interests.”

His remarks come as tensions rise between the party’s progressive wing and centrist leaders like Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who recently criticized Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “Fighting Oligarchy” tour as out of touch with average voters. Slotkin is promoting a strategy to shed what she calls the party’s “weak and woke” image.

Sanders argued Democrats must present working-class voters with a compelling vision if they hope to defeat Donald Trump in future elections.
