Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., defended his use of private jets for his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, saying the travel method was necessary to reach large crowds quickly. The tour, held with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has featured rallies criticizing President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency chief Elon Musk.
Campaign filings show Sanders spent at least $220,000 on air travel for the events, drawing Republican criticism. Speaking to Fox News, Sanders said, “You run a campaign and you do three or four or five rallies in a week. The only way you can get around to talk to 30,000 people.” He dismissed the idea of waiting in long airport lines, adding, “No apologies for that. That’s what campaign travel is about.”
The “Fighting Oligarchy” website calls the events a tour, not a campaign. Neither Sanders nor Ocasio-Cortez has declared a 2028 presidential run, though speculation surrounds Ocasio-Cortez’s future plans. Sanders has repeatedly argued that billionaires control the political process, asking on social media, “Does that sound like a real democracy to you?”
