Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) criticized the Pentagon’s $886 billion budget in a social media post Sunday, agreeing with Elon Musk that the department has “lost track of billions” after failing its seventh consecutive audit. Sanders urged reducing waste in defense spending, noting only 13 senators opposed last year’s military budget.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) echoed similar concerns, advocating bipartisan cooperation with Musk and President-elect Trump’s proposed “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), co-headed by Musk and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. DOGE aims to cut waste, streamline regulations, and advise federal agencies.

Khanna suggested Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee could collaborate with DOGE to address inefficiencies and promote competition among defense contractors. Musk responded to Khanna’s support with enthusiasm on X, formerly Twitter.

The Defense Department defended its recent audit efforts, with Michael McCord, undersecretary of defense comptroller, emphasizing ongoing work to improve accountability.
