Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the U.S. may abandon efforts to facilitate peace talks between Russia and Ukraine if negotiations fail to progress.
Rubio, alongside Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, has been working to broker a 30-day ceasefire, but no agreement has materialized. “We are now reaching a point where we need to decide whether this is even possible,” Rubio said in Paris. “It’s not our war. We have other priorities to focus on.”
His comments followed meetings with European and Ukrainian officials. While Rubio emphasized President Trump’s desire to end the violence, he warned the U.S. would “move on” if progress remains stalled.
Vice President JD Vance struck a more optimistic tone in Rome, stating, “We do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war…to a close.”
Talks are expected to resume in London next week. Meanwhile, Trump confirmed progress on a separate minerals agreement with Ukraine, which Ukrainian Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko signed with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
