WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Ro Khanna said Sunday that Democrats should consider impeaching President Donald Trump for a third time if they regain control of the House, arguing that doing so would establish standards for presidential conduct rather than simply punish Trump.
Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, the California Democrat cited several potential grounds, including Trump’s initiation of war with Iran without congressional authorization, firings of federal employees and allegations involving foreign governments and the Trump family. “It’s about setting a standard,” Khanna said.
Khanna also urged the administration to accept Iran’s proposed seven-day ceasefire framework aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump publicly rejected that proposal Saturday, while Iranian officials said Sunday that diplomacy remained the only viable solution.
Democratic leaders have not committed to impeachment if they win the House. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said relevant committees would determine what oversight or accountability measures are warranted.
Republicans argue another impeachment would be politically motivated. House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan said Sunday that Democrats would use control of the chamber to investigate Trump, his family and senior administration officials rather than conduct “legitimate oversight.”
Trump was impeached twice during his first presidency and acquitted by the Senate both times.
