The Republican National Committee (RNC) is planning for the potential scenario where former President Trump, the GOP presumptive nominee, could be jailed during the convention, said RNC Chair Michael Whatley on Tuesday. Speaking on Newsmax’s “Wake Up America,” Whatley confirmed ongoing discussions and preparations, noting, “I’m actually going up to Milwaukee this week, and we’re going to have a series of conversations.”
Trump was found guilty on all 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records in a hush-money case last week. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 11, just days before the RNC convention begins. Despite Trump’s intent to appeal the verdict, which might delay any jail term, the RNC is considering contingency plans.
Whatley expressed confidence that Trump will be officially nominated at the mid-July convention in Milwaukee, stating, “We expect that Donald Trump is going to be in Milwaukee and he’s going to be able to accept that nomination and if not, we will make whatever contingency planning we need to make for it.”
Plans are being made to ensure Trump can communicate with his base regardless of his situation. Whatley emphasized the need for readiness, saying, “We’ll be thinking about it, and we’re working on that right now. But what we want to do is we want to have a show that is going to roll out Donald Trump and his vision for America.”
RNC’s co-chair Lara Trump echoed the sentiment, highlighting the need for multiple contingency plans, “whether it’s from Trump Tower in Manhattan, whether it’s from Mar-a-Lago, whether it’s from our convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We will nominate Donald Trump as our Republican nominee, and that’s what ultimately matters.”
