Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Gaines County, Texas, on Sunday to support families affected by a deadly measles outbreak and advocate for the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
Kennedy, long known for his vaccine skepticism, has faced criticism for downplaying measles risks. On Sunday, he acknowledged that Texas accounts for 499 of the 642 confirmed measles cases nationwide. Both children who died in Gaines County were unvaccinated, per state health officials.
“The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine,” Kennedy wrote on X. He noted the deployment of a CDC team to assist local health agencies and bolster vaccine access across Texas.
Kennedy also promoted unconventional treatments, including budesonide and clarithromycin, describing the physicians using them as “extraordinary healers.” Medical experts warn these are not proven measles treatments and may weaken the immune system.
Kennedy previously defended his approach in a Fox News op-ed, calling vaccination “a personal decision” while acknowledging its role in public health.
