Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) has introduced a bill to authorize President Donald Trump to buy Greenland and rename it “Red, White, and Blueland.” Carter stated, “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever,” calling the purchase a national security priority.
The bill is unlikely to pass and follows a trend of GOP lawmakers introducing legislation to honor Trump. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) proposed adding Trump’s face to Mount Rushmore, Rep. Addison McDowell (R-N.C.) suggested renaming Washington Dulles Airport after Trump, and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced a constitutional amendment to allow Trump a third term.
Trump has occasionally mentioned purchasing Greenland, prompting Carter’s proposal. Similarly, some Republicans have supported Trump’s push to cut taxes on tips.
Meanwhile, Republicans remain divided on major policy efforts, including tax cuts and safety net reductions. On Tuesday, lawmakers debated increasing the federal deficit to accommodate tax cuts, with Ways and Means chair Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) arguing that a $4.5 trillion limit was too low. “Anything less would be saying that President Trump is wrong on tax policy,” Smith said.
