Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced an impeachment resolution against U.S. District Judge John Bates, accusing him of lacking “intellectual honesty and basic integrity.” Bates recently ordered federal health agencies to restore datasets removed under President Trump’s executive order limiting gender-related health information.
Ogles condemned the ruling, calling Bates a “predator” for supporting policies he claims harm children. Federal judicial impeachments are rare and require a House majority and a two-thirds Senate conviction.
The resolution follows a similar move by Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) against a judge who blocked Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from accessing Treasury Department systems. Musk backed Ogles’s efforts, stating, “Time to impeach judges who violate the law.”
The case centers on the Paperwork Reduction Act, which mandates proper notice before removing government datasets. Bates’s order is temporary and set to expire Tuesday, with the Trump administration arguing for its expiration while plaintiffs seek an extension.
