Democratic Congressman Ruben Gallego has narrowly defeated Kari Lake, a former news anchor and Trump supporter, in Arizona’s Senate race, according to projections by Scripps News and Decision Desk HQ. Gallego, currently representing Arizona’s 3rd congressional district, will take over the Senate seat left vacant by Kyrsten Sinema, who chose not to run for reelection.
Despite Gallego’s win, Republicans will control the Senate, having secured seats in West Virginia, Montana, and Ohio. Control of the House remains undecided; a Democratic majority would allow Congress to check President Trump’s authority, while a GOP majority would give Republicans full legislative control.
