President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while traveling in Las Vegas on Wednesday, according to the White House. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre reported that Biden is experiencing mild symptoms, including general malaise. Despite his positive test, Biden will return to his home in Delaware to self-isolate and will continue his presidential duties.
The news was initially shared by Unidos US President and CEO Janet Murguía during the group’s convention in Las Vegas. Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, noted that Biden presented with upper respiratory symptoms such as a runny nose and non-productive cough. After testing positive, Biden was prescribed Paxlovid, an antiviral drug, and has taken his first dose.
Biden was scheduled to speak at the Unidos event to engage Hispanic voters ahead of the November election. Instead, he left for the airport to fly to Delaware, where he planned to spend a long weekend at his Rehoboth Beach home. Upon boarding Air Force One, Biden, not wearing a mask, assured reporters that he felt good. Earlier in the day, he had visited the Original Lindo Michoacan restaurant in Las Vegas, greeting diners and participating in an interview with Univision.
