President Joe Biden joined a Zoom call with his campaign and Democratic National Convention staffers on Wednesday, aiming to boost morale and confirm his commitment to the 2024 election race, according to Politico. Sitting beside Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden reassured staffers that he is not dropping out, stating emphatically, “I am running,” and adding, “I’m not leaving. I’m in this race to the end, and we’re going to win.”
Vice President Harris echoed Biden’s determination, pledging that their team will not back down and will follow the president’s lead. “We will fight, and we will win,” she said, per Politico.
Biden’s effort to solidify support among his team follows increasing pressure for him to withdraw from the race after a problematic debate performance on June 27. On Wednesday, Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona became the second Democratic lawmaker to publicly urge Biden to step aside, following Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, who called for Biden to quit on Tuesday. A House Democratic aide told Reuters that 25 Democrats are preparing to call for Biden to step down.
The president’s debate performance has also unsettled donors. Whitney Tilson, a longtime Democratic donor, expressed his disappointment on social media, feeling “deceived” by Biden’s poor showing and doubting his ability to beat former President Trump.
