WASHINGTON, D.C., President Donald Trump is confronting weakening public confidence on several issues central to his political identity, according to a new AP-NORC poll. The survey finds that only 31 percent of U.S. adults approve of his handling of the economy, a significant drop since March and the lowest rating he has registered in the AP-NORC series. Immigration approval also fell from 49 percent earlier this year to 38 percent, reflecting broad dissatisfaction with how the administration has managed one of its most visible priorities.
These shifts come as Republicans prepare for the 2026 midterms, a moment when party unity is strained by recent shutdown fights and the inability to stabilize long-term health-care policy. Trump’s overall job approval, now 36 percent, remains comparatively steady, suggesting that some voters distinguish between policy outcomes and their general view of his presidency. Still, the erosion on core issues signals deeper concerns about competence and direction, especially given the administration’s promises of economic renewal and stronger federal management.
Even among Republicans, confidence in Trump’s economic agenda has declined from 78 percent to 69 percent. Public sentiment remains bleak, with 68 percent saying the economy is poor. Trump continues to hold relatively stronger ground on border security at 50 percent approval, although that rating, too, has slipped. The AP-NORC poll surveyed 1,146 adults from December 4 to 8.
