A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday found that 54% of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, while 41% approve.
Disapproval has risen since February, when 48% disapproved and 44% approved. The shift follows Trump’s new tariffs, including a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada. Although some auto parts received a one-month exemption, concerns over a potential trade war and rising prices have shaken consumer confidence and caused stock market volatility.
The survey also found that most Americans oppose tariffs on U.S. neighbors, though a 10% tariff on China received more support than opposition.
Economic sentiment has dropped to its lowest level since May 2023. Only 23% of respondents described the economy as good or excellent, while 76% rated it as poor or not good. Since January, there has been a 6-point increase in those citing the economy as the country’s top concern.
The poll surveyed 1,198 adults between March 6-10 with a margin of error of 2.8 percentage points.
