Peter Navarro, former trade adviser to President Donald Trump, has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to remain free while he challenges his conviction for contempt of Congress. Navarro, set to start a four-month prison term next Tuesday, was convicted in September for ignoring a subpoena from a House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack and Trump’s efforts to contest the 2020 election outcome.

Navarro’s conviction places him alongside Steve Bannon, another high-profile Trump adviser, who also faced contempt of Congress charges but has not served his sentence pending appeal. As Trump mounts another presidential campaign against Joe Biden, Navarro’s case adds to the legal dramas surrounding former Trump officials.
