The Defense Department will resume providing gender-affirming care to service members and their dependents, reinstating surgical and hormonal treatments in response to recent court rulings that blocked the Trump administration‘s transgender military ban.

A memo dated Monday and signed by Acting Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs Stephen Ferrara confirms the return to the previous Biden-era medical policy. “[Service members] may receive appropriate care for their diagnosis of [gender dysphoria],” including counseling, hormone therapy, voice training, and surgeries, the memo states.

The reversal comes after multiple federal judges blocked Trump’s directive, with one ruling calling it “soaked in animus.” The Justice Department has appealed and is asking the Supreme Court to reinstate the ban.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has prioritized eliminating “woke” policies, criticized the move in a speech this week, saying, “No more gender confusion… no more woke bulls‑‑‑.”
