Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered a rare deployment of two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers to the Middle East, as the U.S. intensifies strikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels. A U.S. official confirmed the USS Harry S. Truman will remain in the region for at least another month, while the USS Carl Vinson is being redirected from the Pacific and will arrive in early April.
This marks the second time in six months that two carrier strike groups will operate in the region — a level not seen in years. The move aims to reinforce U.S. military operations and serve as a deterrent to Iran, the Houthis’ main backer.
The Houthis have conducted over 100 attacks on commercial vessels since November 2023, resulting in four deaths and two sunken ships. The group claims the attacks are in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
President Trump has granted U.S. Central Command expanded authority to conduct offensive operations, diverging from prior Biden-era policy, which required White House approval for such strikes.
