Former Vice President Mike Pence took aim at Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday, pushing back against his claim that “access to cheap goods” is not the essence of the American dream.

“Actually, @SecScottBessent, it is,” Pence wrote on X, arguing that while tariffs can be a tool in trade negotiations, free trade lowers costs and improves quality of life. He urged the administration to “pursue free trade with free nations” to revive the American dream.

Pence’s remarks were in response to Bessent’s speech Thursday at the Economic Club of New York, where he stated, “The American dream is rooted in prosperity, upward mobility, and economic security.” He later reiterated that homeownership—not cheap goods—is the goal of the administration’s economic strategy.

The dispute highlights growing Republican divides over Trump’s trade policies, which have shaken financial markets following new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Trump acknowledged the economic turbulence, telling Congress there would be “a little disturbance” as tariffs take effect.
