Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her support Wednesday for the HONEST Act, a bipartisan bill to ban members of Congress — and now future presidents and vice presidents — from trading individual stocks.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), initially bore the acronym “PELOSI Act,” referencing criticism over her husband’s stock trades. Hawley dropped the name after negotiating with Democrats, broadening the scope of the bill to include the executive branch.
“If legislation is advanced to help restore trust in government… I am proud to support it — no matter what they decide to name it,” Pelosi said in a statement, praising the expanded ethical standards.
The measure passed out of committee with unanimous Democratic support and no backing from Republicans other than Hawley. It marks renewed momentum for stock trading bans on Capitol Hill, a proposal that enjoys strong bipartisan support among the public.
Donald Trump initially signaled support, saying in April he would “absolutely” sign such legislation, but criticized Hawley this week for advancing the bill alongside Democrats.
Pelosi had previously dropped her opposition to stock trading restrictions in 2022.
