More than 1,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employees received an email last week notifying them that they could face immediate termination, according to The Hill.
The message, sent by EPA official Kimberly Patrick, stated that affected workers were in a “probationary/trial period” and could be fired at any time. Nicole Cantello, president of AFGE Local 704, warned this could signal mass firings of newer employees with less than a year of federal service.
The email follows a recent federal government “buyout” offer aimed at reducing the workforce. Cantello estimates that between the buyout and potential firings, the EPA could lose 10% of its workforce, impacting programs like clean water enforcement, Superfund site cleanups, and lead pipe removal.
EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin defended potential cuts, stating agencies should align with Trump’s directives and predicting federal workforce reductions across multiple agencies.
