OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has suspended a developer account for violating its policies against political campaigning and impersonation. This action comes in response to the creation of Dean.Bot, a bot mimicking Democratic presidential candidate Congressman Dean Phillips. The bot was developed by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Matt Krisiloff and Jed Somers, who also formed the super PAC We Deserve Better to support Phillips. The PAC received significant funding from billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman.
Dean.Bot, powered by OpenAI’s technology, was intended for use in the New Hampshire primary. However, OpenAI’s rules prohibit the use of its AI tools in political campaigns. The AI startup Delphi, contracted to build the bot, had its account suspended by OpenAI, leading to the subsequent takedown of Dean.Bot.
The bot was designed to engage with voters in real-time through a website, featuring a disclaimer identifying it as an AI tool. This use of AI in political campaigning raised concerns about the potential impact on elections. We Deserve Better and Delphi have not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
