Bruce D. Zuchowski, the Republican sheriff of Portage County, Ohio, stirred controversy after urging residents on social media to keep a list of homes displaying campaign signs for the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. In a Facebook post, Zuchowski warned that undocumented immigrants would flood the area if Harris won, calling immigrants “illegal human ‘Locust’” and encouraging the collection of addresses of those who supported her.
The post, shared on both his personal and professional pages, sparked backlash, with many—including fellow Republicans—accusing Zuchowski of voter intimidation. Tony Badalamenti, a Portage County commissioner, resigned from the county’s Republican central committee in protest, labeling Zuchowski’s actions as bullying. The ACLU of Ohio also received complaints from voters who felt intimidated.
Zuchowski, who is up for re-election on November 5, has since restricted comments on the post and declined to respond to media inquiries. His Democratic challenger, Jon Barber, expressed concern that Zuchowski’s statements could erode public trust in law enforcement.
