Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) introduced articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito on Wednesday, citing their “pattern of refusal to recuse” from matters they are connected to and their “failure to disclose” millions in gifts over decades. Ocasio-Cortez stated this corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has become a constitutional crisis threatening American democracy.
The impeachment resolutions highlight Thomas’s and Alito’s failure to disclose financial information and recuse from cases with personal or financial interests. Thomas is also accused of not recusing from matters involving his spouse’s legal and financial interests, while Alito faces criticism for not recusing from cases with personal biases. Ocasio-Cortez vowed to file impeachment articles after a recent Supreme Court ruling granting presidents broad immunity from criminal prosecution. Democrats are focusing on the Supreme Court to bolster campaigns ahead of the November elections and have proposed reforms like term limits, enforceable ethics codes, and expanding the number of justices.
