Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) announced plans to introduce legislation to address ethics concerns surrounding the Supreme Court. This initiative follows reports of undisclosed luxury trips, gifts, and questionable activities involving multiple justices. Speaking on MSNBC, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized Congress’s authority over the Supreme Court, questioning how to exercise that power to hold the justices accountable.
The proposed legislation would subject Supreme Court justices to the same $50 gift rule that members of Congress follow. Raskin highlighted the need for reform, criticizing the Supreme Court’s lack of a binding ethics code and accountability process. He stated, “It’s the highest court in the land with the lowest ethical standards.”
Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, led by Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), are also pushing for Supreme Court ethics legislation, although Republican opposition is anticipated. The Supreme Court recently adopted a new ethics code, but its effectiveness is limited as each justice enforces it independently.
