North Korea has rejected renewed efforts by South Korea’s government to improve diplomatic relations, citing the South’s continued military alliance with the United States as an obstacle to peace. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, released a statement dismissing any potential talks, calling Seoul’s proposals irrelevant and lacking merit.

“We have no interest in it and there is neither a reason to meet nor an issue to be discussed,” Kim declared.

The rebuke comes despite early diplomatic gestures by South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae Myung, who halted anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts and the distribution of critical leaflets. Lee, elected in June after the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol, campaigned on improving North–South relations.

North Korea has repeatedly framed joint U.S.–South Korea military drills as rehearsals for invasion. Kim warned that no true thaw is possible unless South Korea breaks away from its U.S. cooperation, starting with the military exercises scheduled for August.

Analysts say Pyongyang’s hardline response signals no shift in its longstanding stance that U.S. presence in the region remains a threat to its sovereignty, regardless of gestures from Seoul.
