North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper expressed optimism that his state will vote for a Democratic presidential candidate for the first time since 2008. In an MSNBC interview, Cooper, who was once a vice presidential contender for Vice President Harris, stated, “I got that 2008 feel… We’re gonna really get to work here.”
North Carolina has not voted Democratic since Barack Obama’s 2008 victory, following a long Republican streak since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Former President Trump narrowly won the state over President Biden in 2020 by 1.3 points.
Cooper highlighted the state’s demographic changes, with new residents from the technology, life sciences, and aerospace sectors, suggesting this could lead to a Democratic win. Recent polls indicate a competitive race between Harris and Trump, with Harris trailing by single digits.
Nationally, Trump holds a slight 1.1 point lead over Harris, according to a Hill/Decision Desk HQ poll average.
