SCOTTSDALE, ArizonaHomeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Friday that her department is working to ensure “we have the right people voting” ahead of the midterm elections, framing election oversight as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s responsibility to protect critical infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference promoting a national voter ID proposal, Noem argued that DHS has authority to identify “vulnerabilities” in election systems and implement mitigation measures so elections are “run correctly.” She said public trust in elections depends on being proactive before Election Day.

Her remarks drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers after a clip circulated online. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the comments reflected a view that leaders “get to select their voters instead of the other way around.”

The House recently passed the SAVE America Act, which would require photo identification for federal elections and documentary proof of citizenship to register. The bill faces uncertain prospects in the Senate, where at least one Republican has voiced opposition.

President Donald Trump has suggested he could pursue an executive order if Congress fails to act. Critics argue such measures could disenfranchise eligible voters, while Noem dismissed those concerns as “baseless speculation.”
