California Governor Gavin Newsom called the Los Angeles County wildfires possibly the worst natural disaster in U.S. history by cost, emphasizing the scale and death toll, currently at 13 with more expected. Newsom, speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, announced an executive order to ease environmental regulations for rebuilding and launched an independent investigation into water supply issues.
Newsom stressed balancing immediate disaster response with long-term planning, saying, “We’re here after the crisis, not creating one during it.” He dismissed claims of blame-shifting and affirmed support for local leadership, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Responding to President-elect Donald Trump’s critiques of California’s water policies, Newsom invited him to visit the state, expressing openness and collaboration. Trump’s recent remarks were rebuked by Newsom as divisive, noting, “That mis- and disinformation doesn’t aid any of us.” Newsom highlighted bipartisan support under President Biden for wildfire recovery efforts.
