California Gov. Gavin Newsom invited President-elect Donald Trump to California following public clashes over the state’s wildfire response. In a letter Friday, Newsom urged Trump to avoid politicizing the crisis and join efforts to aid recovery.
“Hundreds of thousands of Americans…deserve to see all of us working in their best interests,” Newsom wrote, citing Trump’s 2018 visit during the Camp and Woolsey fires. He invited Trump to witness the devastation and thank first responders.
Newsom praised President Biden’s swift disaster declaration but condemned Trump’s accusations, calling them “pure fiction.” Trump had criticized Newsom for failing to pump additional water through the state to prevent wildfires, labeling him “Gavin Newscum” in a Truth Social post.
The wildfires have claimed 10 lives, destroyed 10,000 structures, and displaced over 300,000 residents. Newsom accused Trump of politicizing the disaster, highlighting Biden’s supportive approach.
