President Donald Trump announced Monday that the Department of Justice will sue California over Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push to redraw the state’s congressional map in Democrats’ favor.
“I think I’m going to be filing a lawsuit pretty soon, and I think we’re going to be very successful in it,” Trump said during a press event in the Oval Office. He added the DOJ would file the case.
Newsom quickly responded on social media: “BRING IT.” The California governor, widely seen as a 2028 Democratic presidential contender, signed two redistricting bills last week, setting up a November special election to finalize the new map.
Trump’s announcement came just days after he praised Texas Republicans for passing a mid-decade redistricting plan expected to net the GOP five additional U.S. House seats in 2026. He called it “a big win” for Republicans nationally.
Redistricting traditionally follows the decennial census, but both parties are now advancing maps mid-decade. Democrats have condemned the Texas plan, while Newsom is leading California’s counter-effort.
