Nebraska, one of two states that doesn’t automatically give all its Electoral College votes to the statewide winner in presidential elections, will maintain its unique approach. A recent bill proposing a shift to a winner-take-all system failed to pass and was sent back to the committee.

The bill, sponsored by Republican State Sen. Loren Lippincott and supported by GOP Gov. Jim Pillen and former President Donald Trump, aimed to align Nebraska with the majority of states that use a winner-take-all system, which would likely favor Republicans given Nebraska’s electoral history.

However, critics argue that the current system, which allocates votes based on the majority in each congressional district, encourages candidates to focus on diverse areas of the state. Despite the bill’s failure, the debate over Nebraska’s electoral system continues.
