Wisconsin voters have recently approved two amendments that could significantly alter the state’s election landscape. The first amendment prohibits election offices from accessing private grants, which were utilized during the 2020 elections to tackle Covid-19 impacts in polling places. This change comes as a response to the controversy surrounding Mark Zuckerberg’s $420 million donation to a non-profit that distributed funds to election officials in 2020.
The second amendment requires that “only election officials designated by law may perform tasks in the conduct of primaries, elections, and referendums”. This measure was initially proposed by the GOP-controlled state legislature and was sent to voters after a veto by the Democratic governor.
These changes have raised concerns among election officials and voting rights advocates regarding their potential impact on election administration in Wisconsin.
