The National Education Association Staff Organizations (NEASO) announced Friday it is going on strike, causing President Biden to cancel his planned speech at the NEA’s convention.

NEASO, on an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike against the NEA headquarters in Washington, D.C., filed two ULP complaints with the National Labor Relations Board. They allege the NEA has not bargained over unilateral changes, accusing it of wage theft and withholding information about outsourcing $50 million to contractors.

NEASO President Robin McLean criticized the NEA’s actions, stating, “For a union to trick its members into crossing a picket line is reprehensible. NEA has abandoned its union values at the bargaining table.”

The NEA countered, highlighting a proposed salary increase from $124,004 to $133,218 and expressing concern over misinformation. “We have crafted in good faith a proposal for our NEASO staff… ensuring the longer-term health of our organization and the needs of our members,” an NEA spokesperson said.

In solidarity with the strike, Biden’s reelection campaign announced he would not address the NEA on Sunday. “President Biden is a fierce supporter of unions and he won’t cross a picket line,” his campaign stated. Biden plans to still visit Pennsylvania this weekend.

Biden, who has described himself as the most pro-labor president in history, previously joined a picket line with autoworkers in Belleville, Michigan, in September.
