The U.S. Naval Academy removed nearly 400 books from its library after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office ordered a review of materials promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), U.S. officials confirmed Tuesday. The review began late last week and initially flagged around 900 books. Removal of selected titles was completed Monday, ahead of Hegseth’s planned visit to Annapolis, which officials said was unrelated to the library purge.

The action is part of the Trump administration’s broader directive to eliminate DEI content from federal agencies. While a January executive order banned DEI programs in federally funded K-12 schools, military academies were not initially included. However, recent attention on the Naval Academy led to the library review.

West Point and the Air Force Academy have completed curriculum reviews, with West Point indicating readiness to assess library content if directed. The Air Force Academy is currently reviewing its courses.

During preparations for Hegseth’s visit, Naval Academy staff mistakenly removed photos of Jewish female graduates, which have since been restored. Hegseth’s visit was closed to the media.
