SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the first woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, announced Thursday that she will not seek re-election in 2026, ending nearly four decades in Congress. In a video message to her San Francisco constituents, the 85-year-old Democrat reflected on her career and her city’s legacy of leadership.
“With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” Pelosi said, calling San Francisco “the city I love.” Her announcement came just two days after the passage of California’s Proposition 50, which redraws the state’s congressional districts.
Pelosi served as House Democratic leader from 2002 to 2022, shaping major legislation under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden and leading opposition to Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump.
Pelosi’s retirement is expected to trigger a competitive race for her deep-blue seat — the first open contest in San Francisco in nearly 40 years. State Sen. Scott Weiner and former tech executive Saikat Chakrabarti have already announced campaigns.
Pelosi first entered Congress in 1987 and remains one of the most influential and polarizing figures in modern American politics.
