Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) warned Sunday that the Trump administration may be preparing a sweeping crackdown on political dissent, citing heightened rhetoric targeting left-leaning groups. Posting on X, Murphy wrote: “Pay attention. Something dark might be coming.”
“The murder of Charlie Kirk could have united Americans to confront political violence,” Murphy added. “Instead, Trump and his anti-democratic radicals look to be readying a campaign to destroy dissent.” He praised Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) for urging depoliticization but said Trump and allies were framing the left as the sole threat.
Murphy highlighted posts from far-right activist Laura Loomer calling for Trump to “lock up and silence” political enemies, and Trump’s repeated accusations against philanthropist George Soros. He warned such narratives could be used as pretexts for federal action against opposition groups.
The White House rejected Murphy’s comments, accusing him of using “inflammatory rhetoric” that contributes to violence. “Something dark already came,” spokesperson Abigail Jackson said, referencing Kirk’s assassination.
Murphy’s warning came hours before President Trump pledged investigations into left-leaning organizations, telling reporters: “The problem we have is on the left.”
