Minnesota Governor Tim Walz defended his use of the term “socialism” during a summer livestream, clarifying on Fox News Sunday that he supports capitalism while also acknowledging the need for collective societal efforts. When asked by host Shannon Bream about his July comment—”One person’s socialism is another person’s neighborliness”—Walz emphasized that he does not advocate for state-controlled production or the abolition of private property, as defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary.

Walz stated, “I believe in moral capitalism. I believe capitalism works and lifts everyone up, but I also believe you have to make sure there’s things we collectively do together,” referencing public infrastructure, education, and healthcare. He framed his use of “socialism” as a response to how Republicans often label collective societal efforts, adding that such initiatives are essential for public welfare.

Despite Bream questioning whether his phrasing was a “knucklehead thing,” Walz stood by his words, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s claims of a socialist or Marxist agenda under the Biden administration, and asserting that Vice President Kamala Harris is working to build a free, inclusive economy.
