A Defense official confirmed Thursday that Naval Station Guantanamo Bay currently holds zero migrants after the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) transferred detainees back to the U.S. this week.
On Tuesday, 23 high-threat individuals and 17 others previously held at the migrant operations center were relocated to ICE facilities in Louisiana. Neither ICE nor the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) commented on the transfers.
This marks the second time the administration has emptied Guantanamo’s detention site, following the February repatriation of 177 Venezuelans and a recent transfer of 48 migrants to Louisiana.
President Donald Trump’s original plan, announced in January, aimed to house up to 30,000 migrants at Guantanamo before deportation. However, fewer than 300 have been detained there due to logistical and legal complications. The administration has not confirmed whether Guantanamo will continue being used for migrant detention.
