BROOKLYN, New York — Former First Lady Michelle Obama said Friday that the United States is “not ready” to elect a woman president, citing the 2024 election as evidence of persistent gender bias. Speaking at the Brooklyn Academy of Music alongside actor Tracee Ellis Ross, Obama reflected on her experiences and promoted her new book, The Look.

“As we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready,” Obama told the audience. “That’s why I’m like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman.”

Obama said her appearance was constantly scrutinized during her years in the White House, and her latest book aims to reclaim her story and explore how fashion shaped her public life. “I’m thankful to be at a stage in life where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely,” she wrote in a Facebook post promoting the book.

She also addressed broader issues of sexism in politics, saying, “There’s still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it.”

Her comments follow former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 loss to President Donald Trump, a race that reignited national debate over gender and leadership in American politics.
