Washington, D.C. — Speaking at Sixth and I in Washington during a promotional event for her new book The Look, Michelle Obama appeared to indirectly criticize President Trump while discussing the responsibility presidents have to uphold ethical norms in the White House. Without naming him, she said commanders in chief must “set a standard” for the public, especially around accepting gifts and maintaining boundaries.
Obama recalled early examples from her husband’s political career, including a time when Oprah Winfrey sent her an expensive box of designer clothing. She said Barack Obama immediately told her, “You can’t keep that… We don’t accept gifts,” emphasizing expectations rooted not only in law but in tradition. “Our motto was: If it looks like fun, we can’t do it,” she told the audience.
She also commented on the recent demolition of the White House East Wing to make way for the new administration’s privately funded ballroom, saying she and the former president viewed the residence as a public space meant to be opened to more Americans. Obama described her perspective as shaped by childhood experiences on Chicago’s South Side, where she often felt unwelcome in “fancy places.”
During the event, recorded for her “IMO” podcast, Obama shared lighter moments as well, announcing that her husband finally upgraded from his well-known tuxedo and noting that her dresses will be featured in the upcoming Obama Presidential Center. She said her goal with the new book is to broaden definitions of beauty and professionalism, adding, “There isn’t one way of showing up as an American.”
