Washington, D.C. — Rep. Thomas Massie said Sen. Mitch McConnell’s recent calls with Republican colleagues and allies should be made public as questions continue about the Kentucky senator’s health.
McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized and away from Senate votes since mid-June after a medical emergency at his Washington, D.C., home. Reuters reported that McConnell said Sunday he is still recovering from a fall and pneumonia and will not return to the Senate floor “quite yet.”
The Hill reported that Massie joked about the number of Republicans and conservative figures who recently said they had roughly 20-minute conversations with McConnell. Massie said those conversations should begin happening publicly.
McConnell released a statement Sunday saying his doctors advised him not to return to voting yet, but that he remains involved in Senate business. A photo released with the statement showed him seated beside his wife while holding a copy of The Washington Post.
Conservative commentator Scott Jennings and Senate Republican Whip John Barrasso’s office have also said they recently spoke with McConnell for about 20 minutes.
McConnell has not cast a Senate vote since June 11.
