Health officials in Maryland confirmed a measles infection in a resident who recently traveled abroad, marking another case as measles outbreaks continue to spread across the U.S.
The Maryland Department of Health and Howard County health officials announced Sunday that the case is not linked to the ongoing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico, where two people have died—the first U.S. measles fatalities in a decade.
Authorities are working to identify individuals who may have been exposed, specifically those who were at:
- Washington Dulles International Airport (Terminal A, baggage claim, and transport areas) on March 5 from 4–9 p.m.
- Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Department on March 7 from 3:30–7:30 p.m.
Measles is highly contagious, with one infected person capable of infecting 9 out of 10 unvaccinated individuals they come into contact with. Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, cough, and a red rash.
