Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced support for President-elect Donald Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” unveiling her two-page “Gulf of America Act of 2025.” Greene argued the U.S. bears the cost of securing the Gulf for trade and navigation, claiming, “It’s our gulf.”

Trump introduced the idea, along with other initiatives like purchasing Greenland, at a press conference, citing Mexico’s role in illegal immigration. “Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” Trump said.

Greene’s bill would task the Commerce Department and NOAA with implementing the name change within 180 days of enactment. Critics note that the Gulf, shared by the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba, features more Mexican coastline than American.

Greene emphasized urgency, stating, “Congress has to take the Trump agenda mandate seriously and act fast.”
