The National Science Foundation (NSF) is preparing to lay off 25% to 50% of its staff in the coming months, according to Assistant Director Susan Margulies. The move aligns with President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at restructuring the federal workforce.
A spokesperson for the Office of Personnel Management confirmed the downsizing, stating, “The government is restructuring, and unfortunately, many employees will later realize they missed a valuable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the deferred resignation offer.” Critics argue the administration is pressuring workers into resigning through fear tactics.
An NSF program manager warned that slashing the $10 billion grant agency would “gut the intellectual center of U.S. leadership in science and technology.” The layoffs also raise legal questions about compliance with union agreements.
This announcement follows reports of planned job cuts at the General Services Administration and a buyout deadline for federal workers. Meanwhile, Trump has nominated Neil Jacobs, involved in the 2019 “Sharpiegate” scandal, to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
NOAA, responsible for weather and climate monitoring, was targeted for dismantling in Project 2025, a conservative restructuring plan. Jacobs’ appointment signals Trump’s continued push to reshape federal science agencies.
