Luigi Mangione was indicted Thursday by a New York grand jury on four federal charges in connection with the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The charges include two counts of stalking, a firearms offense, and murder through the use of a firearm—making Mangione eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal prosecutors to pursue capital punishment, stating the move would “carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.”
Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on Dec. 4 in Manhattan. Mangione, 26, was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities say they recovered a ghost gun, silencer, and writings expressing animosity, which allegedly link Mangione to the killing.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges filed by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the four federal charges in Pennsylvania.
His attorneys have asked the court to block the DOJ’s death penalty effort, arguing the process was politically motivated and that the grand jury was prejudiced. They cited Bondi’s remarks as evidence of politicization.
