Democrats elected Ken Martin, Minnesota’s Democratic leader, as the new Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair, replacing Jaime Harrison, who did not seek re-election. Martin, a longtime party operative, takes over after Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, which saw him win the popular vote and gain support among key Democratic constituencies.

“We got punched in the mouth in November,” Martin, 51, said. “It’s time to get off the mat, dust ourselves off and get back in this fight.”

The election, held near Washington, D.C., included Wisconsin party chair Ben Wikler, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, and Bernie Sanders’ former campaign manager Faiz Shakir. Candidates vowed to strengthen the Democratic message for working-class voters while maintaining focus on diversity.

A Quinnipiac poll shows just 31% of voters view Democrats favorably. Martin faces the challenge of rebuilding party infrastructure as Trump pushes executive actions.
