Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down as leader of the Liberal Party but remain Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen. Trudeau, who has led the Liberals for 11 years and served as prime minister for nine, made the announcement amid growing political pressures and declining public support.
The resignation follows the abrupt departure of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who criticized Trudeau’s policies as “political gimmicks” in her resignation letter. Trudeau’s leadership has faced challenges including economic discontent, rising costs of living, and opposition criticism.
The Liberal Party will now navigate a leadership transition ahead of a general election expected later this year, where polls suggest a strong advantage for Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party.
